River City Girls

When Kunio and Riki are kidnapped, it's up to their girlfriends to get them back in this collaboration between WayForward and Arc System Works.

Overview

River City Girls is a 2D brawler developed by WayForward and published by WayForward and Arc System Works for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. A physical edition of the latter two releases was published by Limited Run Games.

Players choose from Kyoko and Misako, who have been alerted that their 'boyfriends' Kunio and Riki have been kidnapped. They battle through River City looking for clues, and come across a plethora of kooky characters from Technos history.

At the end of the game, it is revealed that Kyoko and Misako are not really Kunio and Riki's girlfriends, just girls they dated "once" in a 16-bit game which hadn't left Japan at the time (pointed out in typical Kunio-Kun fashion with a very unsubtle fourth wall break). Furthermore, Riki and Kunio hadn't actually been kidnapped, they had just been spending the day at the sauna.
