Coryoon

A Japanese shoot 'em up for the PC Engine. A baby dragon goes out to avenge his princess friend after she becomes chibi-fied by a wizard.

Overview

Coryoon, sometimes Coryoon: Child of Dragon, is a horizontal shoot 'em up developed and published by Naxat Soft for the PC Engine platform. The player, as the titular baby dragon, flies through a series of colorful levels shooting down various cute monsters and collecting fruit and power-ups. The game's story concerns the dragon and his princess friend, who gets transformed by a wandering wizard.

The game exhibits a few distinct shoot 'em up mechanics. The first is that the player can collect one of three elemental power-ups: the red-tinted flame, the blue-tinted ice and the orange-tinted lightning. Collecting successive power-ups of the same type increases the power of that power-up, and getting hit drops the player to the basic fire model. If the player stops shooting, the dragon will charge up a stronger fireball that covers more of the screen when fired. Fruit, which earn points, will fall off the screen shortly after an enemy is killed, forcing the player to get in close if they want to earn a high score.
