Death Bringer: The Knight of Darkness

A first-person party-based "blobber" dungeon crawler RPG that was released on a number of Japanese platforms.

Overview

Death Bringer: The Knight of Darkness, or simply Death Bringer, is a party-based dungeon crawler RPG released for Japanese home computers, the PC Engine CD-ROM (TurboGrafx-CD) and the Mega-CD (Sega CD). The Mega-CD version is the most recent, and includes a useful auto-mapping feature as well as animated cutscenes.

The story revolves around the titular Death Bringer, a mystical grimoire of untold power that is broken free from its resting place during the opening cinematic. Like the Wizardry series, it uses a first-person perspective for exploration and a separate turn-based battle screen for combat, though the player is able to see enemies approach in the exploration view before an encounter to give them time to prepare.

The game was partially developed in-house at Telenet Japan and by contract developers Opera House. The PC88 and Sharp X68000 versions of the game were later released through the Project EGG service.
