Witchaven

A fantasy first-person action game and the first released game utilizing the Build Engine.

Overview

Witchaven is a dark-fantasy first-person action game with light RPG mechanics developed by Capstone and published by IntraCorp for MS-DOS PCs on September 30, 1995.

Combining the free-exploration action of traditional first-person shooters with elements from role-playing games (most notably an experience system), Witchaven puts players in control of Grondoval, knight of the fantasy land of Stazhia, as he infiltrates the demonic Isle of Char to prevent the evil witch Illwhyrin from creating a permanent portal to the chaotic Nether Reaches.

Similar to other fantasy WRPGs, players have access to both traditional melee weaponry (such as daggers, axes, and swords) and spellcasting. Enemies include traditional fantasy WRPG staples such as goblins, ogres, and skeletons. The game makes heavy use of digitized sprites, both with real actors (for Grondoval in the first-person perspective and the final boss Illwhyrin) and claymation (for most of the game's enemies). It also supports LAN multiplayer for up to 16 players (the first FPS to do so).

The game is notable for being the first game released on the Build Engine (a title usually attributed to Duke Nukem 3D). It received a sequel one year later, titled Witchaven II: Blood Vengeance.
