Battle Cars

A futuristic racing game with car combat and Mode 7 graphics. It was released on an 8-Meg cart.

Overview

Battle Cars is a vehicular combat racing game that was developed by Malibu Interactive and released exclusively in the US by Namco. The game closely resembles Nintendo's own F-Zero with its use of Mode 7, but with the inclusion of weapons and a post-apocalyptic story. The player can upgrade their car and weapons by earning credits in racing. It also has a two-player simultaneous competitive mode.

Critical Reception

Electronic Gaming Monthly awarded the scores of 9,8,7,7 with Ed Semrad writing, "...putting together the best features of the available racers, it comes up as a top-notch cart... The two-player option is an added bonus, it's a great idea to be able to blast opponents... It seems to be one of the best racing games out there".
